Learning Resource Center Tip of the Week: AVOID OVERLOAD

The details… If you are one of those rare college students who can honestly say that “overload” is never an issue for you – read no further! Everyone else – please note that there is no secret here. Avoiding overload means including time in your schedule for rest, relaxation, sleep (YES, I DID SAY SLEEP), eating (YES, I DID SAY EATING), and socializing. The ideas are not new: Don’t put things off to the last minute (procrastinate); Don’t say yes, when the appropriate response is to negotiate commitments around already established deadlines; Don’t drive yourself to the point of uselessness. You may know all about how helpful it is to take breaks during study/work periods and that it is crazy making to commit to a party Friday night when the take-home exam you have not started is due on Saturday morning a t 10 am, but sometimes it is extremely hard to DO what you KNOW is in your best interest – physically, mentally, emotionally. You are not alone. We all struggle at times, and we all try to do better….

But, if you are feeling a little “overloaded” right now, you might want to choose to make it a goal to avoid overload and see how you can creatively achieve it. If you want to throw around some fun ideas – stop in to chat with a peer tutor. You may be amazed with ideas they have tried!

The LRC is open Monday-Thursday, 10:50 am – 6:00 pm.

Learning Resource Center Tip of the Week: REALITY CHECK!

The details… While every one wants to be outstanding in their art, not every piece will wind up being everything it could be. Sometimes assignments and projects are designed to move you forward and are more valuable for the experience. Sometimes there just isn’t enough time to do more. Do your honest best to bring your work to a place of completion / resolution, and keep track of ideas you might want to pursue at a later date. When confronted with multiple projects, ask yourself how much time and energy you really have to complete them all. Be honest about your need for sleep and food. Then ask yourself where can you take the project(s) within the time and space you have available. Doing reality checks as needed, can help keep your perspective on things and provide you with a list of ideas for future work as well !

If you are stuck in trying to determine how to sort out all of the tasks and projects on your list of things to do, stop in and talk to a tutor in the LRC. Tutors are trained (and experienced) in how to manage your time for maximum output!

The LRC is open Monday-Thursday 10:50 am to 6:00 pm and other times by appointment.
