Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Article *
The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.

The Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault (http://www.wcasa.org/pages/Events-SAAM.php) provides a list of resources and events that are happening across the state. Events include film screenings, 5K events, and discussions centered around awareness and support.

Locally, Wednesday April 27th is Denim Day, with a press conference taking place in the City of Milwaukee, 10:30am at Pathfinders. Each year, Denim Day takes place at the end of April to bring awareness to sexual violence and help end victim blaming. More information at http://denimdaymke.org/

MIAD strives to provide an educational, employment, and business environment free of all forms of discrimination or harassment. Sexual harassment, including acts of sexual assault, sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual exploitation/misconduct, is prohibited at MIAD. LRC TIP OF THE WEEK: TIME FOR A REALITY CHECK!

Article *
As the end of the semester is nearing, it is an excellent time do a quick “reality check”. While every one wants to be outstanding in their art, not every piece will wind up being everything it could be. Sometimes assignments and projects are designed to move you forward and are more valuable for the experience. Sometimes there just isn’t enough time to do more. Do your honest best to bring your work to a place of completion / resolution, and keep track of ideas you might want to pursue at a later date. When confronted with multiple projects, ask yourself how much time and energy you really have to complete them all. Be honest about your need for sleep and food. Then ask yourself where can you take the project(s) within the time and space you have available. Doing reality checks as needed, can help keep your perspective on things and provide you with a list of ideas for future work as well!

Remember, too, that you can save yourself some time by asking for help. Spinning your wheels over an assignment takes much more time and energy than reviewing what you are doing by talking it over with someone and then getting a clear picture of how to move forward. Stop by the LRC to talk things over with a peer tutor today! We are here for you!
