Prompted by the short story The Yellow Wallpaper, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Lure Near is a collaborative inquiry by Grace Mitchell & SolAh Do (MIAD ALUM) involving both the physical and psychological collision of the perception, projection and experience of mental illness.

SolAh Do is a multidisciplinary artist currently residing in Milwaukee from Seoul, South Korea. Her artistic process entails aspects of photography, installation, performance, video, theatrical set designing, and props. Applying her photographic tools and skills, much of her practice embraces contextualizing her personal experiences into a narrative.

Grace Mitchell is a video artist and writer whose work is often inspired and facilitated by writing and language — body-language, spoken language, and other communicating forms. She recently graduated from UWM and resides in Milwaukee, WI.

More About The Yellow Wallpaper Project, curated by Jenna Knapp (MIAD ALUM):

The Yellow Wallpaper Project is a domestic art space located in a neighborhood attic that invites artists who identify as women to respond to the 1892 short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, loosely or literally. This project challenges both the stigma against mental health and the norm of white-box galleries showing predominately white men. The Yellow Wallpaper project encourages the production of personal work and is excited to hold space for conversations surrounding mental health.

Milwaukee Bucks Call for Local Art Submissions for New Arena

Artists with Wisconsin ties being sought to showcase their creative talents

The Milwaukee Bucks are seeking submissions from artists with Wisconsin ties to showcase their creative talents at the new downtown arena. The team has partnered with Sports & The Arts (SATA) to source and acquire art and photography for the new arena scheduled to open in the fall of 2018. The partnership seeks to create a one-of-a-kind, museum-quality art collection for the arena that incorporates artwork created by local artists and showcases Bucks and regional history.

“We’re excited to showcase art that is intended to reflect our commitment to strengthening the cultural connections between the new arena and our great city and state,” said Bucks President Peter Feigin.

Local artists and muralists of all levels and experience who are interested in being considered for the new arena collection may submit a short bio, sample images of artistic pieces indicating the style of their work and any other relevant information via PDF to bucksart@sportart.net.

PDF submissions should be no larger than 5MB and contain up to eight visual samples of past pieces created by each artist. Upon selection, artists will be notified and commissioned for specific works commencing this winter. All artists will be paid for their work in addition to promotion by both the Milwaukee Bucks and SATA through traditional and social media.

Mediums for submission include paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media), sketches/drawings (pen and ink, charcoal and pastels), mixed media (found objects, digital, assemblage and collage), photography, sculptures, murals, digital art and graphic arts.

Deadline for submissions is August 30 and artists will be notified of their acceptance in November.
