In The Creative Professional in Context, students will explore how to construct a professional, public identity as designers and fine artists through research and writing. Students will complete assignments that challenge them to identify, analyze and practice effective professional forms of communication. Tasks in this course will include: building a resume and cover letter, conducting research on employment and development opportunities specific to their major fields of study, gaining familiarity with online and “in-person” career resources available at MIAD and beyond, and identifying personal, cultural, and professional influences that have an impact on their work. This course will be taught FULLY ONLINE with ongoing reading, writing, workshops and discussions; students must have consistent access to internet throughout the term.

SESSION B
WRTG 400B Senior Writing Seminar: Inspired Play: Finding and Telling Our Stories
Instructor: Dr. Barbara McLaughlin
Course Start/Finish: Monday, June 25, 12:01 am CST, ending Friday, August 3, 12:00 midnight CST.
Pre-reqs: WRTG 300, Senior Standing or WRTG Chair Permission

Description:

As humans, we explore our deepest and most fundamental questions through the stories that we read, write and hear. Starting in early childhood and continuing through our lives, we find meaning, solace, escape, wonder, identity and perhaps even healing through telling and hearing stories. Author Stephen King refers to stories as “found things…relics, part of an undiscovered pre-existing world.” In this creative writing course, students will dig deep, uncover those relics and write from what is found there. It will be up to the writers in this course whether they wish to write fiction, or non-fiction – making that choice within the context of deep reading, discussion, writing and inquiry as a means for determining what needs to be told, how it needs to be told and why. This course will be taught FULLY ONLINE with weekly reading, writing, workshops and discussions; students must have consistent access to internet throughout the term.

LRC TIP of the Week: Harness the Power of Routine

Article *
As the final projects of the semester are rolling out, sometimes it helps to refocus your energies and try a new strategy. Harnessing the power of Routine can be quite effective.

• Instead of devoting a lot of hours one day, and none the other and then a few on an another day and so on, allocate a specific time period each day of the week for that course.

• Hold firm. When that time period arrives, devote your energies FIRST to working on assignments for the designated course.

• Don’t set a goal other than time allocation, simply set the habit of routine.

• Apply this technique to your homework or your projects, and you will be on your way to getting things done – moving forward in all of your classes at the same time!

For more strategy ideas, stop in and talk with a tutor about what you have already tried and do some brainstorming for making adjustments that will work for you!
