The Addiction of Art, The Art of Addiction

Date? Tuesday November 17, 2009
Time? 11:30-12:15
Where? MIAD’s Student Union Gallery
How Much? Free!
The details… The Addiction of Art, The Art of Addiction

Student Services invites you to join us for the opening of a special gallery show in the Student Union on November 17th. The show represents the work of Sam Shapiro, former MIAD student, as he struggled with addiction.

Sam Shapiro was a student at MIAD from (2005-2006). He worked in many media, including digital, pastels, ink and the written word. Sam lived with depression and anxiety, and eventually succumbed to substance abuse.

His mother, Teri Shapiro, has been gathering his work to share his story with MIAD and the community. Teri, through Sam’s work will take us on a journey from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, consequences, rehabilitation, relapse and the ending. In Sam’s case, the power of addiction was stronger than the addiction of art.

Please join us for this powerful message and to start a dialogue about these difficult issues.

Date: Tuesday November 17th
Time: 11:30 – 12:15
Place: MIAD’s Student Union Gallery

The exhibition and program is sponsored by MIAD’s Student Services and is part of our educational programming about alcohol and substance abuse. If you or someone you know is struggling with similar issues, you are not alone. Taking the first step to getting help may be the hardest, but help is there. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program or any of the issues surrounding it, please contact: Sara Blair (sarablair@miad.edu ), Jennifer Crandall (jennifercrandall@miad.edu ), or Tony Nowak (tonynowak@miad.edu ).
