{"id":612,"date":"2013-06-05T11:33:44","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T16:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.miad.edu\/parents\/?p=612"},"modified":"2018-08-14T11:40:46","modified_gmt":"2018-08-14T16:40:46","slug":"milwaukee-named-6th-best-college-destination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.miad.edu\/parents\/2013\/06\/05\/milwaukee-named-6th-best-college-destination\/","title":{"rendered":"Milwaukee named 6th best college destination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Milwaukee jumped 13 spots from last year to be named the 6th Best College Destination for mid-size metros from 2012-2013 by the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aier.org\/article\/7841-aier-names-75-best-college-towns-and-cities-2012-2013\">College Destinations Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.creditdonkey.com\/image\/1\/400w\/milwaukee.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>AIER CDI includes the top 75 towns and cities in the United States for college students, based on a larger evaluation of the 227 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with student populations of 15,000 or more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when approximately half of current college graduates are unemployed or underemployed, the pros and cons of a particular college destination should be an important factor in making a college selection,\u201d said Julie Zhu, the AIER research analyst who oversaw compilation of the Index.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Criteria for the index included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student Concentration: number of college students per 1,000 population<\/li>\n<li>Student Diversity: percentage of student body that are non-U.S. residents<\/li>\n<li>Research Capacity: academic R&amp;D expenditures per capita<\/li>\n<li>Degree Attainment: percent of the 25-to-34-year-old population with bachelor\u2019s degree or higher<\/li>\n<li>Cost of Living: based upon average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment<\/li>\n<li>Arts and Leisure: number of cultural and entertainment venues per 100,000 population<\/li>\n<li>City Accessibility: percentage of workers over age 16 who commute on foot or by public transportation or bicycle<\/li>\n<li>Creative Class: percentage of workforce in the arts, education, knowledge industries, science and engineering, management and other fields<\/li>\n<li>Earning Potential: income per capita<\/li>\n<li>Entrepreneurial Activity: net annual increase in total number of business establishments per 100,000 population<\/li>\n<li>Brain Gain\/Drain: year-over-year ratio of population with B.A. degree (it is only population with B.A degree, not all the college level) living in the area<\/li>\n<li>Unemployment rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aier.org\/article\/7841-aier-names-75-best-college-towns-and-cities-2012-2013\">See the full index here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee was also named a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creditdonkey.com\/where-college-grads.html\">Top-10 City for College Graduates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Milwaukee employers are eager for young talent \u2014 so eager they\u2019ve created an economic development initiative to attract and retain professionals. The city has an unemployment rate of just 3 percent for college graduates, and people with a bachelor\u2019s degree can expect to make 86 percent more than those with just a high school diploma.
